Azimuthal Equidistant Projections of World Map, Centred On and Around Sri Lanka

Image
In azimuthal equidistant projection, a point on the the earth's surface is taken to be the centre, and all points of equal distance are marked from it, all around the globe, until the opposite pole from chosen location (which shall occupy whole perimeter). This is most notably done centred in North Pole, in the UN logo.. but any point could be set, and there are so many cool ones made online, centred around South Pole, LA etc. There's this interactive website (  https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://maps.ontarget.cc/azmap/en.html&ved=2ahUKEwiPrvnM5fKNAxXtcmwGHY0PD2wQFnoECAoQAQ&usg=AOvVaw0cYaAPnEbYJTceDCv9pefO ) that could be used to make any azimuthal projection. I haven't seen any ones centred around SL, so I thought of making some with equidistant setting. And of course, I reccoment anyone to give the link a try, it was fun to fiddle with. Images 1-4 are centred around a location in SL. I like how the world isl...

Ming-Kotte War and Galle Trilingual Inscription

Image
The following was a excerpt of edhaje's Ming Treasure Fleet video on YouTube. idk where the visuals are from, or whether visuals from two different sources have been combined to make this part.. but either way, to know that something looking like this happened on our soil, just 200 years after Polonnnaruwa, would always be interesting.. its the only edit about Ming-Kotte War on the whole Internet so far 😄 Source - https://youtu.be/es__Le3eob0?si=dluap4AOWST9snHv Actually, I'll attach edhaje's video on Zheng He's treasure voyages, cuz its wonderful, and this channel is due all the well deserved credit for creating that scene.. and comprehensively documenting stuff of many topics.  Long story short: Alakeshwara allowed for Piracy in Palk Straight and surrounding areas, the Ming were pissed, and were able to depose of Alakeshwara in the Ming-Kotte War, and have Parakramabahu VI installed, who was "elected by the Sinhalese present at the Ming court, nominated by the M...

Green Medical School - The First Med School in Sri Lanka

Image
The Colombo Medical Faculty was established at around 1870, and tends to be considered the first western medical school in SL, and the second in South Asia after the Calcutta Medical College (1835). However, there was a med school set-up in Manipay in 1848, by Dr. Samuel Green, a missionary doctor from Boston, Massachussets. Dr. John Scudder was the first medical missionary in Jaffna, establishing a dispensary in Pandathirrippu in 1820, illustrated in image 3. And while there had been hospitals operated by the Portuguese and Dutch, they were mostly for their own use, they couldn't rlly be considered the 'modern' medicine, practiced since 1800s or so. Dr. Samuel Green similarly opened his clinic in 1847 (Image 4), which would eventually evolve into the Green Memorial Hospital, which is still operational to this day. The Green Med School trained around 80 doctors from 1850-1875, from local community, who were employed by the British colonial government. There was also a Green...
