Azimuthal Equidistant Projections of World Map, Centred On and Around Sri Lanka

 In azimuthal equidistant projection, a point on the the earth's surface is taken to be the centre, and all points of equal distance are marked from it, all around the globe, until the opposite pole from chosen location (which shall occupy whole perimeter). This is most notably done centred in North Pole, in the UN logo.. but any point could be set, and there are so many cool ones made online, centred around South Pole, LA etc.

I haven't seen any ones centred around SL, so I thought of making some with equidistant setting. And of course, I reccoment anyone to give the link a try, it was fun to fiddle with.





Images 1-4 are centred around a location in SL. I like how the world island remains mostly unchanged and how Antarctica and the new world gets distorted in this very unhinged manner, and this is how I learned that the opposite pole of SL is somewhere in the sea near Central Americas.



Images 5 and 6 are centred around the equator directly below SL, the reason for trying out is so that the annoying x is off SL, and the projection is relatively unchanged, a slightly better aesthetic.


Image 7 is something I bet any South Asian would love, which is this projection centred around the absolute centre of the Indian Ocean. I haven't seen this one before, so it was so cool to see what this actually looks like. I tried to have the 4000 km perimeter touch SL, Madagascar, Australia and Antarctica, so as to be an absolute centre. What's funny is how the opposite pole to this would be some land in South Texas. Found that from this antipode generator ( https://www.datadaptive.com/ant/?lat=-26.601627&lng=80.08554 ), also a fun lil tool.


For slightly better aesthetic, in image 8, changed that opposite pole/antipode to the sea just adjacent to thus US east coast, and that would centre is somewhere in the triangle between SL, Madagascar and Australia, which gives centre of Lemuria vibes, lol. I also like that these how these tools are present for anyone to use, cuz anyone would love to experiment with making their location the centre of the world, or seeing what's directly below the feet in opposite side of world.

Would love if there were better renders of these online, these arent bad tho.. kudos for the website for keeping these running. Hope these maps may be enjoyed, haha.

Chola Inscriptions from Sri Lanka, at Colombo Museum

These photos are of 3 Chola inscriptions from 10th/11th centuries AD, from the Colombo National Museum. Although from SL, they are Chola, which also makes them heritage of Tamil Nadu too. Tamil Nadu and SL during mideaval and ancient times had amazing histories and heritages. (Courtesy of Colombo Museum) The above '2 inscription 1 pillar' inscription, "refers to an endowment for the burning of the perpetual Lamp at Teruviramesvaram at Matota [Mannar] by a dignitary serving under king Rajendra Cola (1012-1044 AC). Three merchant had accepted responsibilties for the endowment". The Cholas had control over the three key seaports at Mannar, Jaffna, and even Trincomalee (Thirukkomalai/Thrikunaamalai), which is a huge leg-up in the Indian Ocean. Cool Pre-Colonial Lankan History Anecdotes

The Aztecs were sovereign till 1521 which was when Buvanekabahu VII was ruling Kotte.. and Incas were sovereign till 1533.. which was during the time of Mayadunne and just when Kandy came into existence.. its cool that we had the Portuguese instead of Spannish 💀 Moving on to the pre-colonials: It was also very interesting to find out that Polonnaruwa was essentially a mideaval kingdom, with King Mahaparakramabahu living at about the same time as Richard the Lionheart. Mahaparakramabahu lived just 300ish years before Portuguese arrival, which was 500ish before now. It's a testament to the longevity of Anuradhapura, which lived on from 437 BC to 1017 AD, again ending at early mideaval. As a matter of fact, it was interesting to see that even South Indian dynasties had a similar longevity, with even Pandya living on till 1618 AD.
